How to create a customer group

Customer groups allow you to segment your customers so you can control access to specific sale items and discount codes. This article explains how to create a new customer group and configure its settings.

InfoBefore you start: ensure the Customer Groups feature is enabled for your company.

Create a customer group

1. Go to Customers.

2. Select the Customer Groups tab.

3. Click Create customer group.

4. Select the Group type:
  1. Manual: Customers are added and removed by an administrator.
  2. Automatic: Customers are automatically added and removed based on purchase history rules that you define.
5. Enter a Name for the group.
  1. This name is visible to administrators.
  2. If welcome emails are enabled, it will also be included in the email sent to customers.
6. Configure the optional group settings described below.
7. If you selected an Automatic group, define the purchase history rules that determine which customers qualify.
8. Click Submit to create the customer group.

Alert
Note: The group type is chosen when the group is created and cannot be changed later.

Configuration settings

Default time until removal
How long a customer remains in the group after being added, in days or weeks. Leave blank for indefinite membership. You can switch between days and weeks using the toggle next to the input.

Customer group expiry date
An optional date after which the group expires entirely. Once expired, new members cannot be added, automatic syncing stops, and the group no longer grants access to restricted items or discounts.

Send email when customer added
When enabled, customers receive a welcome email the first time they are added to the group. Available when editing an existing group.

Customer list lifetime

The Customer list lifetime setting behaves differently depending on the type of customer group.

1. Manual groups
For manual groups, the customer list lifetime sets the default removal date when adding a customer to the group.
  1. This date is applied automatically when a customer is added.
  2. It can be changed for individual customers if required.

2. Automatic groups
For automatic groups, the customer list lifetime defines the minimum amount of time a customer remains in the group after being automatically added.

During an automatic resync:
  1. Customers will not be removed from the group until the configured lifetime has elapsed.
  2. This applies even if they no longer meet the purchase history rules.
  3. Once the lifetime has expired, customers who no longer match the rules will be removed during the next resync.
